I received a call from my daughter’s school in the middle of a workday and was told she was involved in “dangerous behavior with a stranger.” The urgency in the principal’s voice sent panic through me, and I rushed over immediately. Among them were photos of a little girl who looked like Lily, but wasn’t her. The man, Thomas, explained that the girl in the pictures was his granddaughter, Emma, who passed away at five years old. He mourned her every day and began stopping by the school because Lily reminded him of her. Lily had approached him first, shared food with him, and began leaving drawings and messages encouraging him to feel better. For three weeks, she unknowingly helped him cope with grief.
